Italian sweet roasting pepper.

Showy sedum is a perennial with attractive, succulent, bluish-green leaves. In late summer, it blooms with flat-topped clusters of star-shaped white flowers on the stem tips above the leaves. Eventually showy sedum will form clumps up to 2 ft. tall and wide, but it does not spread agressively. This easy-care plant has been popular as a passalong plant in the Southeast for ages; we were given the ancestor to your plant over 30 years ago. It grows best in sunshine and rather poor, sandy, well-draining soil, but is adaptable to partial shade. Once established, it is quite drought-tolerant. Note: For fun with kids, remove a leaf from a well-established showy sedum and use your finger tips to gently squeeze it all over so that it turns darker green and the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf begin to part. Then puff a breath into the stem end and the leaf will inflate like a little balloon.

These Clove Pinks, a Mother's Day favorite, just came through the winter in style. They are just now beginning to bud up, and there is a bloom on each plant. The pink carnation is the symbol of a mother's undying love. These lightly fragrant, pink beauty "carnations" (more properly named Clove Pinks) are herbaceous perennial plants that will overwinter -- mine usually do unless we get an awfully cold winter. They do like slightly alkaline soil, which can be a problem if you are putting them directly into your garden. Don't forget to water them in the summer. The carnation is the birth flower for those born in the month of January. The formal name for carnation, dianthus, comes from Greek for "heavenly flower".

Sometimes called "falling stars", crocosmia produce long, thin, stems with up to 50 individual tubular flowers that open progressively, delivering red, orange and yellow blooms from mid summer and into fall. These multiply by little bulbs, and each pot has at least four young plants. Either plant them "as is" or separate and plant about 5 inches apart; within a season or two they'll fill and make a sturdy bunch for a lovely show of foliage and flowers. Crocosmia plants are virtually pest- and disease-free. Add to that the ability of cut stems to last a week or more in a vase, and you've got an easy care, , beautiful garden plant. They prefer full sun for best blooming, but can take Athens' dry summers in stride.

Crocosmia plants are virtually pest- and disease-free. Add to that the ability of cut stems to last a week or more in a vase, and tendency for the plants to develop into sturdy clumps, and you've got an easy care, well-mannered, beautiful garden plant. The Periwinkle or Vinca is one of my favorite flowers. This Illuminated cultivar (introduced in 2001) is a yellow & green variety which has a trailing habit, so it is a good plant to have in a planter where you want the undergrowth to spill out over the edge. It has the typical blue flower in the spring (very pretty) and keeps its colorful leaves all year long. It does well in partial to full shade, is drought tolerant and can be mowed. I treat mine awfully. I don't feed it, water it or mind if the dogs run across it. It keeps on growing year after year. **HISTORY** "In 1995, Christy Hensler discovered this vinca in the foothills of the Selkirk Mountains in Washington state. It was later introduced in the years 2001 and 2002. What an exciting discovery this plant was. Its outstanding attribute is in the evergreen foliage. During the growing season the leaf centers start out a chartreuse color and edged with a dark green. As the season progresses the centers turn golden. In the winter the centers are cream colored. The stems turn pinkish red as the season progresses and holds its color through winter."

This is a bit of the English ivy I brought from my aunt's Maryland home some 30yrs ago. Everytime I look at it, I remember her. She warned me that I would soon hate that ivy. For 20yrs it was well-behaved and did what I wanted it to do which was contain a hillside & stop erosion. However in the years since her death, it has run rampant over and around everything near my house, including up the windows and into my living room. Be prepared to have a firm hand with this beautiful vine. I recommend it for so many things, especially the fact that you can plant and forget it, but please remember that it is invasive and can overtake everything in its path if you don't control it.

This is the small, delicate ivy found in mass plantings or home containers. It's pretty, it's slow growing and it's containable. Please be aware that all parts of this plant are poisonous, so keep children/pets from sampling. It is an everygreen, needs little watering and will make you a very attractive underbedding for showy flowers.

Daylilies are a gardener's delight and a plant geneticist's dream. Their big blossoms not only hybridize easily, they sometimes double, triple, or even quadruple their normal (diploid) chromosome numbers. Kwanso is a one of these -- a native tawny daylily that has kept twice its usual chromosomes, and thus blooms with twice the usual number of petals. It also tends to bloom for a longer period than regular tawny daylilies, and tends to be even hardier. It's almost impossible to tell Kwansos apart from regular tawny daylilies just from the leaves, so the time to get one of these beauties is after someone (like me?) has actually seen it bloom. I rarely have one of these beauties, but here's your chance!

Lamb's Ears is a perennial with very fuzzy, pale, silvery gray-green foliage. They are grown primarily for the color and texture of their foliage, although they also have flower spikes with little purple flowers in late May and early June. Lamb's Ears are often recommended for children's gardens because of their soft feel. They are easy to grow, preferring partial shade to full sunlight and well-drained soils not rich in nitrogen. These are first-year plants now, but will become a low-growing, spreading clump.

This lavendar phlox is filling the pot and blooming for all she's worth to attract the earliest of butterflies. It tolerates light shade and droughty conditions, but like all phlox the literature mentions that it is prone to powdery mildew in the heat of the summer. Honestly I haven't had any problems, but it's good to know. This plant is a mounding variety growing to about 2ft high and 2ft wide.

These spiderworts are drought, heat and insect resistant, and tolerate being ignored. I brought the parent plants from a garden in upstate NY about 5 years ago. They hardly had any roots, yet I was told to plant them anyway - anywhere I had a vacant spot. Ended up I planted them in an old black rubber cattle feeded and forgot about them. In the last 5yrs, the have not been "fed", only rec'd rainwater, lived exposed to full sun conditions all droughty summer and come-what-may all winter, and yet they are blooming. Can you imagine what they would have looked like if I had taken care of them? I remember the garden they came from was just lovely with the this true-blue bloom, and I immediately fell in love with it. I'm keeping half and I offer you the other half.

Pretty as a houseplant or in the garden... (Not a strawberry and not a begonia -- you gotta love common names! However, it does look a tiny bit like a cross between the two.) Indoors, strawberry begonia is particularly nice in a hanging basket or a pot on the windowsill. Outdoors, this long-lived plant loves part shade/part sun, and thrives either as a specimen or as a slowly spreading groundcover. The airy white flowers also brighten a shady garden.

Spectacular plants with 6" blooms that appear from late summer until frost. Each color of Angel Trumpets has a slightly different growth habit. The white ones are shorter than our yellow bloomers, and the plants have more of an "umbrella" shape. Angel trumpets are a "tender perennial" and will die back to the ground each winter. When that happens, cut the stalks back and mulch heavily around the plant. When spring returns, they should sprout anew.

Dramatic white trumpet-shaped flowers, each longer than your hand, hang beneath tropical-looking foliage on this large shrub-like (very tender) perennial. They have a delicate, attractive scent with light lemony overtones, most noticeable in early evening. The plants are adaptable but appreciate morning sun and (being fast growers) frequent food and water. Brugmansia are native to subtropical regions of South America, where they become large shrubs or small trees. Here, the tops are killed by frost but with a bit of protection, the roots usually resprout the following spring. We've been growing Angel's Trumpets for many years, and each fall we root cuttings in case the plants in the ground get frozen out. (So far, they never have.) These will have white trumpets when they bloom in late summer to early fall. The plants also grow slightly smaller than the other colors do.

Spectacular blooming plants that produce pendulous trumpet-shaped flowers, each longer than your hand, in late summer to early fall. The flowers have a delicate, attractive scent with light lemony overtones, most noticeable in early evening. Because Angel's Trumpet is subtropical and requires a long growing season, potted plants offer a headstart on blooming. When you get one of these plants, peel off the container and put the plant in a deep hole in rich soil. (Like tomato plants, Angel's Trumpet will root along whatever length of stem is buried.) This yellow variety is the most vigorous grower of the three colors that we grow. The plants are adaptable but appreciate morning sun and (being fast growers) frequent food and water. Plants can become 4 to 5 feet tall in one summer. Given ideal conditions, they can grow 12 feet high within a few growing seasons. Angel's Trumpet is classified as a "tender perennial" in our region. The tops are killed by frost but with a bit of protection, the roots usually re-sprout the following spring. We've acclimated your plant to being outside in temperatures as low as the 40s, but bring it inside or provide extra protection if we experience a late cold snap.

Our best dry shade groundcover... we have this blanketing a dry wooded slope, and even in years of drought, it has only temporarily wilted but come back in fine shape. Archangel has green leaves laced with silver variegations, and blooms yellow in late spring to early summer. It has a sprawling habit that makes it also a pretty trailing addition for container gardens or hanging pots. A passalong plant, yellow archangel is easier to grow than the pink- or white-flowered Lamium that can sometimes be found in the nursery trade. Like so many other easy to grow plants, it has sometimes been called invasive, but in our experience it is quite well behaved, and if a volunteer appears where you don't want it growing, it is easy to transplant or weed out.

An old fashioned, trouble-free favorite, four o'clocks are a fast growing bushy plant (2-3 ft high by fall) with oval lance shaped leaves and many trumpet shaped, fragrant flowers.They are named from their habit of opening in the late afternoon. The flowers close the next morning, except on dull, cloudy days. We've been growing Four O'Clocks for over a dozen years now. Ours all have yellow flowers. They grow in ordinary garden soil, sun to part shade, and we've never had pests bother them. They also seem(!) to be deer resistant. Also known as Marvels of Peru, these hardy plants are often listed as annuals, but in the Athens area they are perennial, forming a woody bulb, and reseed themselves as well. Interesting note: Dr. Alice Le Duc, now at Duke University, did her doctoral thesis on four-o'clocks and found that they were cultivated and selected for various colors by the Aztecs many years prior to the Spanish Conquest. They were sent to Spain from Mexico in the 1500's and to England within 75 years. The plant had been in cultivation in Europe for about 200 years before Linnaeus first described the species in 1753. The specimens he described were those of cultivated plants. However, although often found in Mexico and the South on old garden sites, this species is no longer found in the wild in Mexico.

Goldmoss is a lovely little plant with tiny succulent leaves and in the spring, small yellow flowers in the spring. Originally native to Europe, it is popular in flower garden borders, hanging baskets, or container gardens as a trailing accent. (Our photo shows it edging a bed of Dianthus.) This plant grows as a creeping ground cover, often in dry sandy soil, but also in the cracks of masonry. It grows well in poor soils, sand, rock gardens,and rich dirt; and in a variety of light conditions. About the only place it does not thrive is in dense shade with limited water. Goldmoss spreads when allowed to do so, but is easily removed (or transplanted) because it has shallow roots. Handle it very gently when planting.

Wonderful dry-garden plant! Named for its bright purple coloration when grown in full sun, purple heart can tolerate some shade as well, and then becomes a paler shade. Enjoy purple heart as a potted plant on a sunny windowsill until mid-April, then move it into the garden. Little pink flowers grow at the base of the leaves, which fold up slightly around them like a cradle, so that some people call the plant "Moses in a basket" (even though that name is used for one of its close relatives, too.) Purple heart begins by growing upright, then begins to bend and grow sideways, becoming a bold ground-cover or a beautiful way to soften the edge of a retaining wall. Purple heart will die back to the ground when frost hits it in the fall, but if the roots are mulched a bit, it should come back every year.

Helleborus or Lenten Rose is one of the first blooming perennials in the Spring. It is low growing, evergreen,drought tolerant and deer resistant. Ours are grown in 1 gal pots outside under pine trees. They are blooming now. They are full plants covering the top of the pot. Because they are from seedling they may have a couple of different plants in them, so you may a pink flowering plant and a white or maybe a red. If you specify what color you want I can pull one that has that color. Just realize you may have another plant in there not blooming that is a different color.

Right now is PRIME TIME to control FIRE ANTS... they are sending out hundreds of winged queens to start new mounds. Here at the farm we make a fantastic all round organic ant-killer and sell it on Athens Locally Grown. Totally non-toxic except to ants. This organic ant killer is a special recipe. Toxic to ants (fire ants, too!) but not to pets or people, it leave no residue and can be used throughout your yard on fire ant mounds. I came up with this recipe to get rid of ants but not harm my free-ranging chickens. It is simple and clean. Simply sprinkle 2 to 3 tablespoons of the mixture on the mound and your ant problem will disappear. The mixture contains just the right mix of diatomaceous earth, borax, ground corn, a little sugar and some spicy spices. The sugar attracts them...the corn causes their stomachs to expand, the diatomaceous earth destroys their exo-skeletons, and the Borax is toxic to ants. You won't be disappointed.
