Ajuga - Dark purple (ground cover / shade)Grower: Blackbriar Farms
Price: $2.75 ( 3" peat pot )Available (Estimated): 15
Ajuga prefers light shade to full shade and tends to be smaller, shorter and less healthy in the full hot sun. It will grow 2 to 5 inches tall and spread to 12 to 18 inches. As a ground cover, I have found its spread to be slow but steady. It requires no special care. Put it in the ground, water for a few weeks to get it established. ~ Sunlight: Shade to part shade ~ Bloomtime: Early Spring ~ Bloom Color: Shades of Blue ~ Leaf Color: Dark purple, Bronzes, Greens ~ Planting Apart: 18" ~ Will Grow: 24-48" wide ~ Height: Leaves to 3-4 inches ~ Use: Ground Cover

Athens Locally Grown Hunter's Moon Feast, Boann's Banks (Royston), Saturday, October 23Grower: Farm Tours
Price: $0.00 ( each )Available (Estimated): 20
The October full moon has been known as the "Hunter's Moon" for millennia, and was a time of feasting throughout the Northern hemisphere. We revive the notion here with a day of feasting at Boann's Banks (the farm of Athens Locally Grown managers Chris and Eric Wagoner) on the banks of the Broad River outside Royston.
It'll be a low-key affair, without any farm work for you to do. Just good food and drink (Eric will prepare a variety of dishes using locally grown vegetables and locally raised meats, blueberry mead, and perhaps some farmhouse cheeses. There's also the possibility of home-brewed beer, and the likelihood of good live music. There'll certainly be good company (all of you), and a river to splash in. There's even some camping space, for those who really want to enjoy the moon.
Come any time, but I'll be aiming for 2pm to have the BBQ and other dishes ready. Stay as long as you'd like, even into Sunday. Nights are chilly, though, so bring a tent if you're wanting to do that.
There is no charge for Locally Grown members and their families. We do ask that you bring a dish to share, and if it's made from Locally Grown ingredients, so much the better.

Annual -- Coleus (bold crimson)Grower: Menagerie Acres
Price: $1.50 ( each )Available (Exact): 2
I call this one Attention Getter. The larger leaf and bold color (shallow lobed, primarily bold, dark crimson with green edging)of the leaf with a crimson stem stands out to get noticed. Give it lots of room and a good trimming to get the best that it can give.
Well rooted in a 3in cup.
Helpful hint: pinching back growing tips encouragages bushing. In bright hot areas, the colors of the plant will typically be more intense in shaded areas than in full sun, and the plants will require less water there. Coleus make low-maintenance houseplants. Easily raised from seed, they can be propagated by clipping a length of stem just below the leaves and putting the stem in water to root or directly into potting soil.

Annual -- Coleus (Twisty Leaves)Grower: Menagerie Acres
Price: $1.50 ( each )Available (Exact): 24
One of my favorites, this coleus has a bright, medium-sized leaf (shallow, many-lobed, white center vein surrounded by bright, medium green leaf)with a green stem. What sets this coleus apart is the curly leaves which draws the attention of all who visit my plants. Currently 6-12 inches high, they await a new owner to put them in a bigger spot (pot or garden) and give them a good trim, so they can spread out as they want to do.

Annual -- Wishbone (White)Grower: Menagerie Acres
Price: $1.50 ( each )Available (Exact): 9
One of my favorite flowers, this white Wishbone (Torenia fournieri) is a mint relative that likes partial shade. Plants are overgrown in 3-in containers and ready to burst into a profusion of white trumpets before Jack Frost does his deadly deed. Annual --Butter Daisy (Melampodium)Grower: Jan's Garden
Price: $2.25 ( 1 plant (4-inch pot) )Available (Estimated): 4
Apple-green foliage will be covered in little yellow daisies through summer. These carefree annuals thrive in full sun and ordinary garden soil.
Don't let their current small size fool you. They grow rapidly. The growth habit of individual plants may vary somewhat, but in general each plant will eventually become a flowering mound that can reach 1-2 feet tall and wide.
Butter daisies can be planted at any time during the summer. They will need daily watering for the first week after they are planted, but after they get their roots down, they can survive even dry Athens summers with no pampering at all.
Butter daisies will reseed themselves. We use them as happy fillers every year in our flower gardens, letting them come up where they may. (They are prolific but not a nuisance, because any strays can easily be pulled up while they are young.)
