Brussel Sprouts - Baby Cabbages

Grower: Menagerie Acres
Price: $2.50 ( per dozen )
Available (Exact): -2

This variety of Brussel Sprout does not have the tight little golf ball that you find in the freezer section of the grocery store. It is oval shaped, looser, about 2oz, and has an excellent flavor. Unlike most green vegetables, Brussels sprouts are rather high in protein. It is very important not to overcook Brussels sprouts. Not only do they lose their nutritional value and taste but they will begin to emit the unpleasant sulfur smell associated with overcooked cruciferous vegetables.

Cabbage - summer slaw

Grower: Double B Farm
Price: $8.00 ( each )
Available (Estimated): 5

most of the ingredients needed to make the
best coleslaw you have ever eaten.

mix is small red and green cabbage, two green onions and a few carrots.

Simply chop the cabbage to your liking, chop the onions and carrots as fine as you wish then splash with apple cider vinegar, two tea spoons of sugar. Allow to rest for about 10 minuets, then toss with mayo, salt and pepper. I like to let this chill, for at least an hour if not longer.

Makes a wonderful slaw for 4 or 5.

Perennial - Illuminated Periwinkle (drought & heat tolerant)

Grower: Menagerie Acres
Price: $2.00 ( per well rooted plant )
Available (Exact): 10

The Periwinkle or Vinca is one of my favorite flowers. This Illuminated cultivar (introduced in 2001) is a yellow & green variety which has a trailing habit, so it is a good plant to have in a planter where you want the undergrowth to spill out over the edge. It has the typical blue flower in the spring (very pretty) and keeps its colorful leaves all year long. It does well in partial to full shade, is drought tolerant and can be mowed. I treat mine awfully. I don't feed it, water it or mind if the dogs run across it. It keeps on growing year after year. **HISTORY** "In 1995, Christy Hensler discovered this vinca in the foothills of the Selkirk Mountains in Washington state. It was later introduced in the years 2001 and 2002. What an exciting discovery this plant was. Its outstanding attribute is in the evergreen foliage. During the growing season the leaf centers start out a chartreuse color and edged with a dark green. As the season progresses the centers turn golden. In the winter the centers are cream colored. The stems turn pinkish red as the season progresses and holds its color through winter."

Water Buffalo Bone-in Rib Steaks - Medium

Grower: Carrell Farms Inc.
Price: $24.00 ( 2 steaks (1.5 lb. total) )
Available (Estimated): 10

Shalley's favorite! Our 100% grass fed water buffalo bone-in rib steaks are full of flavor, and while leaner than beef, are still marbled. Our buffalo live a specie-appropriate lifestyle and are humanely harvested. They are raised with love and respect, not hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides. Water buffalo meat is known for being a heart healthy red meat, nutrient dense -- high in CLA (a good fat that helps our bodies to burn fat) and B-vitamins. Keep in mind that this is not beef. The bite is slightly firmer, and the taste is sweet and flavorful without being gamey. It is very easy to overcook this meat. If you often cook grass fed beef or venison, chances are you'll be just fine cooking buffalo. Searing or grilling are good cooking methods for our steaks, just be sure to take them off the heat one temperature sooner than desired and allow it to rest, covered, for 5-10 minutes (i.e., for med-rare, remove from heat at rare). Enjoy!

Enjoy!

Perennial (Heirloom) - Red Hollyhock

Grower: Jan's Garden
Price: $3.50 ( 1 young plant about 4" tall in 3" nursery pot )
Available (Exact): 9

The ultimate cottage garden choice, hollyhock sends up tall spires that cover themselves in flowers that open from the bottom to the top of the spike throughout the summer. Once established, hollyhocks are very drought resistant, and do well in full sun locations that might be too hot or dry for other plants. Hollyhocks are biennials, that is, they grow only foliage the first year. They flower the second year and die that fall but if you establish a stand of hollyhocks, they'll reseed each year so there will always be plenty blooming. These tall (up to 8 feet) beauties are ideal against fences or buildings where they can get natural support. New varieties can be found that have a double row of frilly petals, but these old-fashioned red ones with a single cone of petals are the kind that are especially attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies.

Balloon Flower - Blue Platycodon

Grower: Jan's Garden
Price: $3.00 ( 1 young plant about 1 to 2" tall in paper cup )
Available (Estimated): 15

These lovely perennials grow in full sun or light shade, and need good drainage and moderate watering. In fall, the foliage of balloon flower plants turns clear gold, so don't cut the plant down too early -- enjoy the show! They make great cut flowers if you cut them in the bud stage, and sear the base of the stems to prevent the milky sap from seeping out. Incidentally, balloon flowers are named for their inflated buds -- which, like real balloons, are fun for children to pop! Like many other plants with milky sap, they are also used as an herb, especially in Chinese medicine.

Perennial - Asiatic Lily "Lollipop"

Grower: Menagerie Acres
Price: $3.00 ( per plant )
Available (Exact): 5

The Asiatic Lily "Lollipop" flowers will make you think of a little kid who's been savoring a very delicious, and very red, lollipop. The tips of each white petal are stained a pretty cherry pink, just like the lips of a messy little child enjoying his lollipop. Asiatic Lilies need average drainage and full sun and other than that they are happy wherever they are planted. Their height will be 24-30 inches. Bloom size is 3-5 inches across. The blooms are NOT fragrant, and this variety is vigorous - it multiplies like crazy. That is good, because is looks best in a cluster of plants.

Perennial - Spiderwort

Grower: Menagerie Acres
Price: $1.50 ( per plant )
Available (Exact): 3

These spiderworts are drought, heat and insect resistant, and tolerate being ignored. I brought the parent plants from a garden in upstate NY about 5 years ago. They hardly had any roots, yet I was told to plant them anyway - anywhere I had a vacant spot. Ended up I planted them in an old black rubber cattle feeded and forgot about them. In the last 5yrs, the have not been "fed", only rec'd rainwater, lived exposed to full sun conditions all droughty summer and come-what-may all winter, and yet they are blooming. Can you imagine what they would have looked like if I had taken care of them? I remember the garden they came from was just lovely with the this true-blue bloom, and I immediately fell in love with it. I'm keeping half and I offer you the other half.

Grower: Lazy Willow Farm
Price: $5.00 ( 2 cups )

Delicious homemade granola. There are no additional dried fruits or nuts--just our granola. Made with organic, freshly rolled oats (that we roll ourselves) and lightly sweetened with honey. Includes butter, coconut oil, cinnamon and salt. Soaked in yogurt to allow the oaks' natural nutrients to be absorbed by the body. Wonderful as a cereal replacement as the granola does not become disgustingly mushy.
