These near-daily storms have been something else, no? My girls and I went into kitty yoga(*) Tuesday night with everything fine and we came out with limbs and leaves down all over the place. I always think about our market growers who are working outside in the rain day after day, trying to make do with what the weather’s given them. It’s so easy to be removed from our food, and the conditions under which it was grown and harvested, but when it was grown just down the road from your house, you know exactly what kind of weather the farmers have to put up with. Every growing season has its challenges, for sure, but at least it’s not been terribly hot and dry.
(Kitty yoga is every Tuesday from 6:30 to 7:30 at Memorial Park. $5 donation gets you an hour of yoga in a room full of kittens, fostered and up for adoption by Athens’ Circle of Friends Animal Society. It’s a really fun hour.)
It’s time again for “Tomatoes at Terrapin”, the annual fund raiser for the Athens Nurses Clinic. A week from Saturday, in fact, July 21st from 4:30 to 7:30. The Athens Nurses Clinic is a quiet but hugely important group in town, and attendees at this event get to help them continue their cause of providing free medical services to our community by eating deliciously fresh, locally grown tomato sandwiches and drinking refreshing, locally brewed Terrapin Beer. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the amazing tomatoes that local farmers donate to the event and help those who need medical services. There will also be live music, provided by The Common People Band. You can find out more info, and a link to buy tickets ($25 in advance, $27 at the door, including food and Terrapin beer with an event customized beer glass, at their website: tomatoesatterrapin.com — Bring your chairs, blankets, and kids!

Market News
Happy Independence Day week to everyone out there! Wednesday is the day we celebrate our independence from the tyranny of a king, but it’s also a great occasion to think about our independence from all sorts of things. Your support of Athens Locally Grown greatly helps the cause of food independence for our community, for starters. Did you know that, on average, American farmers receive only nine cents out of every dollar that gets spent on food? By the time you take out the cut of the processors, the distributors, the wholesalers, and so forth, only 9% is left for the farm. And of course, they’ve got to try to meet all of the expenses of running a farm with that money, and pretty much the only way to do that is by consolidating the farmland into huge “corporate” farms that can get by with the economies of scale. The farms might be independent family-owned enterprises on paper, but they’re beholden to all of those other interests that control the other 91% of the food dollar. Here at Athens Locally Grown, the growers keep 90% of every dollar, turning small, truly family owned and operated farms into viable businesses. That fosters variety for you, provides a sustainable use of our community’s green space, and helps in no small way Athens be a more self-reliant community.
For you, too, these growers and their products let you become independent from the corporate grocer, who is told by the corporate office in Cincinnati or Bentonville or Asheville what they can and can’t stock and who they can source their produce from. You’re given the freedom to choose who grows and produces your food and how they grow and produce it. If you don’t like one grower’s products or methods, you have a hundred others, all located right here, to choose from.
And of course by sourcing your food so close to home, you don’t have to be reliant on an overtaxed and under-vigilant inspection system to make sure your food is safe. The government at all levels actively tries to reduce your ability to choose where your food comes from in the name of safety, so not everything is rosy. Sometimes the regulations are warranted, but often the rules put in place are easy for corporate farms but extremely difficult for small farmers to meet. Our fight for independence is an ongoing one, and your voice in support of the small local producer does get heard.
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

The rain has been coming down in buckets, in particular during the torrential start to AthFest Friday night, and I’m really enjoying it. It’s been giving us brief respite from the heat, and getting all this water into the ground now will pay dividends later for sure. It has had its downsides with the growers, though. The berry brambles have been taking a beating right as things were ripening, and that can knock the berries to the ground before they’ve been harvested. Garlic, onions, and potatoes are starting to come out of the ground and all three do much better with a period of dry air to cure, and that’s been in short supply. Still, overall the good outweighs the bad, and we’ll be glad later for the rain we’re getting now.

This week marks the equinox and the first official day of Summer. And right on cue, we’ve got a week full of sunny skies with temps up in the 90s. Should be a wonderful weekend for AthFest, even if it’s so, so hot. I got my first quart of blueberries this week, and promptly turned them into a pie, mixed with some ALG rhubarb I still had in my fridge from a few weeks ago. Turned out tasty enough that I just had pie for dinner last night. I just might finish it off before bed.

This week we see the first of the summer berries listed, in extremely limited quantities for now. Blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries are all just starting to ripen, and in the coming weeks we should start seeing a flood of them. It ought to be a good year for berries, since we didn’t get any late freezes, the spring was relatively long and cool, and we’ve had plenty of rain. It might be a great season to stock up on blueberries when they’re in their peak and freeze them for later. In the fall, when the cranberries from up north arrive, justo mix equal parts of those and frozen blueberries right in a dish and cover with a streusel topping (even a box “apple crisp” topping mix is fine) and throw that in the oven. So easy, and the mix of sweet blueberries and tart cranberries is perfect. Can’t wait!

The town has slowed to a crawl, and it seems like my Facebook feed is a non-stop slideshow of photos of people on vacation. And from what I can tell from those pictures, everyplace in the country is either under a thunderstorm or on fire. Here in Athens we’ve broken the all-time record for consecutive days of rain. Depending on if that one little rain cloud that followed me down Prince Ave. this afternoon made it over the official weather station, the streak might still be alive.
All the rain really made it difficult to tend to my garden, and it’s easy to see the frustrations our growers have had. I did manage to get the last of the seeds in the ground today, all except for okra. I forgot to save room for them, but I think I can find some space when I finally tear out the last of the spring Brussels sprouts. This is the first season I’ve used all of the raised beds the home’s owners put in years ago, and it feels so nice to have a diverse garden right outside my back door. It’s not enough to completely supply my kitchen, not even close, and so I’m so thankful for all our growers who are doing what they can through the mud and muggy air and onslaught of bugs to grow so much great food for the rest of us.

Market News
It’s a holiday Monday, where we remember those fallen in our wars. It’s also the symbolic beginning of summer, marked with cookouts and other outdoor activities. If you’re out there, grilling your locally grown burgers and veggies, please remember those who have left us.
There’s not much new to report this week. Summer veggies are really starting to come in now, and the recent rains and cool nights might keep the spring items around a little longer. We’re at the change of the season now, and everything is very weather dependent. Just a little too much heat will end the spring items, and just not enough sun will keep the summer goodies from ripening. If we get a few days in a row on the hot and dry side the spring crops will begin struggling, but that can all change day to day.

School’s done, the fireflies are out, and the temperatures are soaring — summer’s here! The rains have come at just the right time, to knock those temps back a bit and to get that moisture into the ground. The spring leafy greens will soon take their leave from the Athens-area farms, but the ALG growers further up in the mountains will keep us supplied for quite a while yet. Asparagus and strawberries are winding down, but I saw social media posts today showing the first ripe blueberries. The changing of the seasons is such an exciting time, and we’re lucky to have growers spread out enough that we see some overlap in what they have to offer us.

Market News
A special hello to all the mothers out there this week! I hope your families treated you to something a little above and beyond this weekend. It’s been a really slow week, news-wise, what with much of Athens getting ready to go to sleep for the summer. The place doesn’t quite turn into the ghost town I remember in the ‘90s when I moved here, but there’s definitely a change of pace. We’ve gotten a taste of summer the last few days, and that’s stressed out the strawberries and leafy greens, but rain this week should really help with both of those. We ought to get our new awning in place before Thursday, to give us all some shade and a place to keep dry. I see lots of pictures on social media from our farmers busy in the fields, so as many people leave town for a bit, that just means more great fruit and veggies for the rest of us!
