Market News
These near-daily storms have been something else, no? My girls and I went into kitty yoga(*) Tuesday night with everything fine and we came out with limbs and leaves down all over the place. I always think about our market growers who are working outside in the rain day after day, trying to make do with what the weather’s given them. It’s so easy to be removed from our food, and the conditions under which it was grown and harvested, but when it was grown just down the road from your house, you know exactly what kind of weather the farmers have to put up with. Every growing season has its challenges, for sure, but at least it’s not been terribly hot and dry.
(Kitty yoga is every Tuesday from 6:30 to 7:30 at Memorial Park. $5 donation gets you an hour of yoga in a room full of kittens, fostered and up for adoption by Athens’ Circle of Friends Animal Society. It’s a really fun hour.)
It’s time again for “Tomatoes at Terrapin”, the annual fund raiser for the Athens Nurses Clinic. A week from Saturday, in fact, July 21st from 4:30 to 7:30. The Athens Nurses Clinic is a quiet but hugely important group in town, and attendees at this event get to help them continue their cause of providing free medical services to our community by eating deliciously fresh, locally grown tomato sandwiches and drinking refreshing, locally brewed Terrapin Beer. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the amazing tomatoes that local farmers donate to the event and help those who need medical services. There will also be live music, provided by The Common People Band. You can find out more info, and a link to buy tickets ($25 in advance, $27 at the door, including food and Terrapin beer with an event customized beer glass, at their website: tomatoesatterrapin.com — Bring your chairs, blankets, and kids!
Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!
