Market News

The town has slowed to a crawl, and it seems like my Facebook feed is a non-stop slideshow of photos of people on vacation. And from what I can tell from those pictures, everyplace in the country is either under a thunderstorm or on fire. Here in Athens we’ve broken the all-time record for consecutive days of rain. Depending on if that one little rain cloud that followed me down Prince Ave. this afternoon made it over the official weather station, the streak might still be alive.

All the rain really made it difficult to tend to my garden, and it’s easy to see the frustrations our growers have had. I did manage to get the last of the seeds in the ground today, all except for okra. I forgot to save room for them, but I think I can find some space when I finally tear out the last of the spring Brussels sprouts. This is the first season I’ve used all of the raised beds the home’s owners put in years ago, and it feels so nice to have a diverse garden right outside my back door. It’s not enough to completely supply my kitchen, not even close, and so I’m so thankful for all our growers who are doing what they can through the mud and muggy air and onslaught of bugs to grow so much great food for the rest of us.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!
