Market News

The town has slowed to a crawl, and it seems like my Facebook feed is a non-stop slideshow of photos of people making up for a year being stuck at home going out on vacation. If you, like me, are still here and want more reason to be out in the garden or yard before the heat gets too terrible, I’ve been told this coming weekend is the last that Sunrise Nursery, recently opened in the old Thyme After Thyme location on Winterville Rd, will be open until Fall. During the heat of the summer, they’ll be scaling back their public hours to just “by appointment” only, and they’re running a BOGO sale on their summer annuals before they go. It’s been wonderful to see that property getting used for growing things again!

There’s a great variety of veggies listed this week, thanks to the overlap in seasons and the hard work of our growers. I’m excited to see fresh crops of potatoes and garlic, alongside cherry tomatoes from Sundance, the first bush beans from Ladybird, a selection of cucumbers, squash and zucchini, and still plenty of lettuces and other leafy greens. I know everyone is looking forward to the heirloom tomatoes (it’s still just a bit early for those), and for good reason, but in recent years I’ve really grown enamored of the variety of heirloom potatoes our growers produce. You might get fooled be the grocers into thinking there’s only four kinds, russet, red, white, and yellow, but our growers can introduce you to a whole world of flavors and colors that industry has ignored!

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you at our market’s home on Tallassee Road!

We are still getting new customers every week (and we love seeing new masked faces!) so for all of you you can find a detailed run-down of how Thursdays go on our website here: https://athens.locallygrown.net/faq#7

Other Area Farmers Markets

If ALG doesn’t have everything you need, please support our growers at the other markets that are now back up and running, or at their own locations. The Comerian takes online orders for Saturday pickup at the bakery here: https://www.thecomerian.com/online-ordering. The Athens Farmers Market is holding their Saturday market once again in Bishop Park. They’re still operating under pandemic rules, so you’ll want to read up on all the changes on their website, http://athensfarmersmarket.net. The West Broad Farmers Market is back, holding a drive through market just like us (and using my software too, so it’ll be nice and familiar). You can join them at https://wbfm.locallygrown.net. The Saturday market in Comer has also returned. They’re small, but sometimes an early Saturday drive to Comer is just what the soul needs. And of course Collective Harvest is going strong over at https://www.collectiveharvestathens.com.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
