Market News

It sure was a beautiful weekend, right? Just perfect for getting out and working in the garden, like there wasn’t even a layer of ice and snow on everything not ten days before. Sure, we’ve got some cold nights ahead this week, but still, this is the time of year when everything in the summer garden is perfect — when it’s all still in your imagination.

If you’re poring through seed catalogs, dreaming of a yard full of vegetables and flowers, but are a little apprehensive about what it’s going to take to get you there, fear not. There are many resources about town to help you go from idea to reality. One such resource is the fine folks at Hungry Gnome. For a number of years now, they’ve been offering services ranging from consulting to full installation work, and a number of ALG customers have taken advantage of their skills. Yo can find out more about their Vegetable Garden Support plans on their website, http://hungrygnome.org/Garden_Support_by_Hungry_Gnome.html, and they’d love to take care of that apprehension for you.

I’ve got a lot of work to do in my own gardens to get them ready for planting, since I didn’t do a fall or winter garden this year. I haven’t even started, but I’m looking forward to getting to it.

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you (hopefully) on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Washington-Wilkes Farmer’s Market in Washington is open every Saturday 9-12 behind the Washington Courthouse. The Athens Farmers Market has closed for the winter. You can watch for news during the offseason on their website. The other area markets I haven’t mentioned are also all closed for the season. We’ll be here all year round, however!

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
