Market News

It feels like summer is suddenly upon us! I still can’t get over how great my garden looks, but walking out into it is now something that requires a shower and a change of clothes. Looking through the market listings this week, I see all the summer favorites: tomatoes, eggplant, squash, cucumbers, beans, peppers. Only the corn and okra have yet to make an appearance, but I expect we’ll be seeing them soon.

Cathy Payne, our Farmer for a Day event coordinator, reported back after our event on Saturday at Dragonfly Farm. I had to miss it, but it sounds like it was a great time for all: “Thank you, volunteers, for a great work session yesterday at Dragonfly Farm in Nicholson. It was such a beautiful, tranquil setting. I’m sure David appreciated all your work digging colorful potatoes, picking beans, and planting sweet potatoes. Lunch was delicious and enhanced by David’s contributions of fresh baked bread, blueberry crumble, peas, and chow-chow. Thanks to Athens Locally Grown for beverages, PBJ, side dishes and paper products. Here is a link to the Facebook page with photos from today’s event. Feel free to tag photos, like the page, and share with friends. We have one more tour in September at Full Moon Farm in Winterville and a Hunter’s Moon Feast October at Boann’s Banks. Hope to see you there!”

Speaking of Full Moon Farm, the Athens Banner Herald reported online today that Farm 255 (supplied by Full Moon Farm) has been sold and plans on shutting its doors in just a few weeks. Full Moon and the others related farms will finish out the season, and I don’t yet know what they’ll be doing after that. I’m hardly in town for dinners these days, but I’ll be making at least one special trip just to stay goodbye to a place that’s been very influential in maturing and bringing attention to our local food system.

Finally, we did finally receive the new SNAP machine from Georgia’s new EBT/SNAP contractor, so we can again accept SNAP cards on Thursdays. Sorry for the two weeks without!

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market on Saturday has opened for the season on Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons (see their website for info). The Oconee Farmers Market is now open on Tuesdays 4-7pm on Main Street next to the First Christian Church along with their Saturday hours of 8am-1pm in front of the Court House in Watkinsville. The Washington-Wilkes Farmer’s Market in Washington is open every Saturday 9-12 behind the Washington Courthouse. The Royston Farmers market is Thursday mornings downtown. Many of the ALG vendors sell at multiple markets, so you can find plenty of good food at these other markets.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (even the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
