Market News

It looks like this week will see our first full taste of spring weather, and I for one am really looking forward to that. I’ve been longing for warm evenings when I get home from work for getting in some work and play outside between dinner and my daughters’ bedtime.

Our growers have all been hard at work for quite some time, of course, with many of them growing food for us year ‘round. Now that the veggies are growing quickly, the other area farmers markets are starting to wake back up for the year. I’ve heard the Comer the market has already been open for a few weeks. The Saturday Athens Farmers Market in Bishop Park is opening this coming weekend. Others will be following in the weeks ahead. As these markets open, our growers have to juggle their harvests between the markets they sell at, and it can take them time to get used to how busy the markets will be for them. So, if you notice some volatility in the availability these next few weeks, that’ll be one reason why. As the weather continues to warm up, the veggies will start coming in more quick;y to satisfy all the growers’ markets, and that volatility will settle down.

Also this coming Saturday is the 17th Annual Old-Timey Seed Swap in Crawford. I’ve been including the information about this great event in my last two newsletters to you, and you can find it all on our website here: http://athens.locallygrown.net/weblog/view/21551. I love this event, and hope to see you there!

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Washington-Wilkes Farmer’s Market in Washington is open every Saturday 9-12 behind the Washington Courthouse. The Athens Farmers Market will be opening their Saturday market this coming Saturday, and their mid-week market will open later in the year. You can catch the news on their website. The other area markets I haven’t mentioned are also all closed for the season. We’ll be here all year round, however!

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
