Market News

First this week, a note about our holiday schedule. The overwhelming majority of growers have told me they were taking next week off, so we are going to go ahead and close down the market next week. You can order extra to get you through the week, and the Saturday market at Bishop Park is open one more week before taking a winter break. We will be open again on January 2nd, and will continue on through the winter without further interruption.

There are 1025 items listed this week, even though we’ll see the first day of winter this weekend. The growers keep improving their cold weather growing techniques to improve our selection. Three years ago we had only 860 items available this time of year. Quite a few of those items make great gifts, too. It’s not as hard as you may think to wrap a head of broccoli, but there are even more suitable gifts on the site ready for gifting. Cheese baskets, cookie boxes, cakes, soaps, coffees, candles, felt and yarn, woven scarfs, wreaths, jams and jellies, honey jars, bacon, and of course all purpose ALG gift certificates.

And if none of those strike your fancy, the Athens Farmers Market at Bishop Park, located at 705 Sunset Dr., from 9 a.m.–12 p.m., is holding one more session of its special Holiday Craft Markets on Dec. 21, featuring a good selection of handmade items including ceramics, stationary, jewelry, soaps, candles, lotions, knitted hats and scarves, metal art and more. For details, check out athensfarmersmarket.net.

We hope that whatever holiday you celebrate, you have a festive one. Myself, I try to celebrate all of them this time of year. I guess I’m just a jolly sort of fellow.

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturday mornings at Bishop Park (see their website for info). The Oconee Farmers Market is open on Saturdays 8am-1pm in front of the Court House in Watkinsville. The Washington-Wilkes Farmer’s Market in Washington is open every Saturday 9-12 behind the Washington Courthouse. Bishop has started their first ever “Bishop Central Winter Market” that runs every Sat. from 10-2 pm downtown Bishop, at Bradford Pottery on Hwy 441, from Dec 14 through Jan 18, featuring all local veggies, grass fed meats and cheeses, eggs, baked goods, farm crafts and more.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
