Availability for May 31

I hope you have been enjoying the traditional opening weekend of summer. I spent the day with friends, grilling locally grown meats and vegetables, and generally having a great time. So much so, that I very nearly forgot today was Sunday and I needed to open the market. I don’t think I’ve ever done that in the seven or eight years I’ve been running Athens Locally Grown, but there’s always a first time…

So, here’s your opening bell for the last week in May. There are nearly 1200 products to choose from this week, and more and more of your summer favorites are making an appearance. There’s not okra or corn yet (mine is still only inches high), but the other categories are really starting to fill up with great products. I keep hearing that the potato and garlic harvest were strong this year, and there are 33 listings between the two of them. I’ve also heard that onions are spotty this year, thanks to a variety of fly that usually gets killed off in greater numbers during the winter. Still, there are 23 listings of onions this week, so get them while you can!

Thank you for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!
