My winter mesclun is a mix of leaf lettuce, baby leaf (finger length and no longer) kale, spinach, chard, radish, mustard and whatever else is coming in the hoop house. These baby leaves are very young and tender with a mild flavor. It's a necessary part of a winter dinner when the kids come home to visit. (Mesclun is from a Latin word meaning "to mix thoroughly". When applied to salads, it indicates a mixture of young, leafy greens. In Spain they just say "ensalada verde".)

Mounding perennial, this is a German selection deep purple salvia, with purple stems and currently in early bloom. It blooms from June to October. With its gray-green aromatic foliage, it makes an attractive accent all summer long. Salvia ‘Caradonna’ was awarded the Outstanding New Perennial in 2000 by the International Hardy Plant Union. It has a plant height of 30” and a spread of 12-18” and stays in excellent compact form. Salvia ‘Caradonna’ should be planted in full sun in a moist well-drained area. To increase bloom time, it should be cut back after the first bloom. ‘Caradonna’ is a magnet for butterflies, bees and hummingbirds and is deer-resistant. I've had this Stonecrop so long that I don't remember its name, but I can surely tell you about her. I got the parent as a gift, and she has had babies galore, but this plant is NOT invasive. This is a TALL sedum of about 2-3 feet high. I plant it on the west-facing areas since it can really take the heat. It does have a pretty flower on long, strong stalks. I like it best when it's green before it blooms - some people think it's a brocolli cousin when I include it in bouquets. Other people enjoy the baby pink blossoms that appear in late summer to early fall. The plant dies back in the winter and is refreshed each spring. You can have a few, or if you separate the base, you can have a lot. This baby can tolerate anything you give it: Heat, Drought, Too much Rain, but it is susceptible to DEER.

This is the same Border Stonecrop as in the other offer, only these are in-ground plants that are already 18in high. I can dig them out and not harm a thing, as long as YOU plant them within a week or so of delivery. They will produce flowers even if transplanted. Hopfully you can see, by the picture, that they make a pleasant border, though I would keep them in the back of the planting because of the flower display in late summer/early fall.

Chinese fringe flower, or Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum, is an ornamental shrub that will liven up your landscape with its dark burgundy foliage and bright pink blooms. Evergreen in warm climates, blossoms start appearing as early as March. The Chinese fringe flower blooms heavily through the spring and early summer, continuing sporadically throughout the summer and fall. Shrubs should be kept pruned so as not to outgrow your garden space. Full sun encourages the color, but this plant will tolerate part shade especially in the hot summer. Forsythia are great used as hedgerows, or planted singly. Don't be concerned about the current small size of these little beauties. These plants are well-rooted offshoots of our parent bushes, and their tops haven't yet caught up with their root growth. However, they have already begun blooming, and their tops will grow quickly during the summer. Forsythia is an extremely fast growing bush, up to one to two feet per year.

This plant has been with for two full winters, so it's going on 3yrs. Spiraea japonica "Walbuma" PP9363. As you can see in the picture, it is leafing out well with fresh, young color. This is a flowering deciduous shrub, native to Japan, with dark pink flowers and foliage that changes from red to bronze to maroon as it matures. It needs 6-8hrs of sunlight per day, and tolerates droughty conditions. It has a compact mound of 2ft high and 2ft wide. The flowers will attract butterflies.

Not a rose but a profusely blooming, drought-tolerant shrub with showy blossoms and nectar that attract hummingbirds and tiny insects that hummers also eat. Native to India and East Asia, it is the national flower of Korea. Rose of Sharon come in several colors -- these are a light lavender color. They are small now, but will grow rapidly. In full sun, these will become multi-stemmed shrubs that are 8 to 10 feet tall unless they are pruned back while dormant (which we recommend because it increases the number of blooms). Rose of Sharon are deciduous shrubs, so they lose their leaves in winter, which makes it easy to prune them at that time.
