Also sometimes called "Thai" basil, this tropical basil is common in the cuisines of Viet Nam, Laos, and Cambodia, where it is added generously to green and red curries and spicy stir-fried dishes. Sprigs are also put on a platter, to be nibbled on with spicy dips and salads. At this time of year, each "stem" has over 20 leaves, which are smaller than regular sweet basil leaves.

The rich green leaves of this variety of garden mint (Mentha piperata) smell like chocolate. Try chopping them and sprinkling them over a fresh fruit salad for that uplifting chocolate aroma, reminiscent of mint-flavored chocolate. Or add a leaf or two to your tea, coffee, lemonade, or stronger beverage. Mint can be dried, but fresh is always the very best, and the fresh young leaves harvested at this time of year are the most full-flavored. We clip the tenderest 6-8 inches off the top of each stem, and bundle them loosely for you in bunches of about 6 stems. Each stem has about 12-16 leaves.
