Baby Rubber Plant (Peperomia obtusifolia)Grower: Jan's Garden
Price: $4.00 ( 1 plant (ca. 4 inch pot) )Available (Exact): 3
A member of the pepper family and not at all related to the big rubber plants, this is a lovely foliage plant with round waxy leaves and strange flowering spikes. It grows easily, and will adjust to everything from steamy greenhouses to dry windowsills. It does fine with only indirect light. This species has been recommended as a "clean air houseplant" to remove formaldehyde from indoor air.
Peperomia comes from the American tropics. It occurs in dense damp tropical hardwood forests and warm sheltered sloughs inside swamps on the Caribbean islands and in South Florida. This species is considered an endangered species in the wild, but our plants are the grandchildren of nursery stock, many generations removed from the wild.
Peperomia likes high humidity and moist soil, but not wet feet. Drench when the soil surface gets dry, but hold off a little longer in the winter when the plant is not in active growth.

Butter Daisy (Melampodium)Grower: Jan's Garden
Price: $2.50 ( 1 plant )Available (Estimated): 10
Apple-green foliage covered in little yellow daisies through summer. These carefree annuals thrive in full sun and ordinary garden soil.
The growth habit of individual plants may vary somewhat, but in general each plant will eventually become a flowering mound that can reach 1-2 feet tall and wide.
Butter daisies can be planted at any time during the summer. They will need daily watering for the first week after they are planted, but after they get their roots down, they can survive even dry Athens summers with no pampering at all.
Butter daisies will reseed themselves. We use them as happy fillers every year in our flower gardens, letting them come up where they may. (They are prolific but not a nuisance, because any strays can easily be pulled up while they are young.)

Canna Lily -- Red passalongGrower: Jan's Garden
Price: $3.00 ( 1 plant in 6-inch pot or bigger )Available (Estimated): 5
Grandma probably had these sturdy perennials in her garden. The large-leafed stalks grow to about five feet tall, then are topped by deep red flowers. These old-fashioned plants bloom a bit later than the newer hybrids found in plant nurseries today, but are quite trouble-free and live for years and years.
These are the last ones we have available right now, and a bit smaller than the others we offered. (Hence the new lower price.) They will not bloom until next summer, but the tropical-looking foliage is attractive and if planted in a sunny spot, they soon will multiply into a nice clump.

Forsythia is a lovely shrub. It has a glorious mounding and cascading habit and will be about 5' high and wide if left to grow naturally. It may need a snip here and there, but really should be left in its natural state... so be sure it has plenty of room to stretch! It is one of the first messengers of spring with its covering of brilliant yellow flowers quickly followed by bright green leaves. Forsythia needs full sun to maximize its spring blooms. It is easy to root from cuttings or it will root on its own when branches rest on the ground.

Mahonia HollyGrower: The Flower Girls
Price: $8.00 ( 18"-2' )Available (Estimated): 5
The Mahonia Holly is also known as the Oregon Grapeholly. It is an evergreen holly and has beautiful blue-black berries that look like clusters of grapes, hence the name grapeholly. The berries occur in late summer and are very appealing to birds...therefore you may see new Mahonias popping up elsewhere in your yard. The Southeast Exotic Pest Plant Council considers the Mahonia invasive. The Mahonia does not tolerate dry, hot soils; it prefers the shade. It will make a good specimen, foundation, or border plant. It is a slow to medium rate grower and can reach a height of 6-9 feet. The leaves are a lustrous dark green in summer and a purplish bronze in fall.

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)Grower: Jan's Garden
Price: $6.00 ( 1 plant in approx. 8-inch pot )Available (Exact): 0
One of the few houseplants that will flower in low light, Peace lilies are sturdy plants with glossy, dark green oval leaves.Periodically they produce lightly fragrant white flowers that resemble calla lilies. The long-lasting flowers start out pale green and slowly turn creamy white as they open.
Peace lilies can tolerate very low light, but for good blooming they prefer bright indirect light (such as that filtered through a sheer curtain). They can spend the summer outdoors, but should never be placed in direct sunlight or the leaves will "sunburn". Water them with room-temperature water whenever the top inch of soil is dry. Don't let them stand continually in water, or get so dry that they wilt (this will make the leaves turn yellow).
Peace lilies come in various sizes. Ours are about 14-18 inches tall, and over time, they tend to multiply in the pot rather than becoming taller.

The prickly pear cactus typically grows with flat, rounded platyclades (or stems) that function as leaves. Prickly pears have 2 kinds of spines: large, smooth, fixed spines and small, hairlike spines that easily penetrate the skin and detach from the plant. Rose of Sharon, also known as Althea, is a deciduous shrub/tree. This one has a beautiful lavender-blue bloom. Rose of Sharon is a member of the hibiscus genus and the blooms very much resemble the hibiscus. The butterflies and bees love them. Rose of Sharon grows in sun to shade. I have it growing in full afternoon sun, but I have also had it growing on a shady creek bank. I think it would prefer a little shade. It blooms in July and August, with the blooms forming very prolific seed heads. It's very easy to capture these seeds and propogate your own. They are fairly fast growing.

Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus)Grower: Jan's Garden
Price: $4.00 ( small plant in 4-inch pot )Available (Estimated): 2
Not a rose but a profusely blooming, drought-tolerant shrub with showy blossoms and nectar that attract hummingbirds and tiny insects that hummers also eat. Native to India and East Asia, it is the national flower of Korea.
Rose of Sharon come in several colors -- these are a light lavender color. They are only about six inches tall now, but are well leafed out and will grow rapidly. Despite their youth, some flowered already this year. In full sun, these will eventually grow into multi-stemmed shrubs that are 8 to 10 feet tall unless they are pruned back while dormant (which we recommend because it increases the number of blooms).

Spider Plant/Airplane Plant ( Chlorophytum comosum)Grower: Jan's Garden
Price: $5.00 ( 1 plant )Available (Estimated): 1
Known to reduce indoor air pollution, these popular plants, with long variegated leaves, produce "babies" that hang off of long stems. For this reason, they are often put into hanging pots. Originally from South Africa, they are one of the nicest plants for beginners.
Spider plants thrive on "benign neglect." Spider plants also need to be allowed to dry between waterings. Most problems arise from over watering. Keep an eye on the foliage -- it becomes pale and droopy when it's ready for water. The root system is large and tuberous, and can store water longer than most hanging plants.
The ones we have now are relatively young, so they haven't made offshoots yet. You may want to transfer them to a hanging pot, but use a small pot. The more crowded the plants are in their pot, the more babies they ultimately will make.

Spider/Airplane PlantGrower: The Flower Girls
Price: $3.00 ( 1 small transplant in container )Available (Exact): 2
This plant is a tender perennial here in GA. It can also be a houseplant. It grows about 18-24" tall and in summer sends out long shoots with new plants on the end of the shoots. Spider/Airplane plant is fabulous in hanging baskets. It requires light shade. Keep soil consistently moist. My Mother Plant grew in my backyard (left there by the previous home owner). She died out over the winter, but miraculously reappeared in the spring. I did not know she would do this. I had always had them as houseplants. But, alas, brilliant me moved her into a concrete planter last summer. Mother Plant had over 50 babies, but did not survive the winter in concrete. Beautiful and easy to care for, this popular houseplant has heart-shaped leaves with yellow variegation. Pothos used to be called philodendron. You're probably familiar with it already -- because it is very hardy, it is often used in decorative displays in shopping centres, offices, and other public locations. It is also efficient at removing indoor pollutants such as formaldehyde, xylene, and benzene.
A trailing plant that hangs prettily over the pot, pothos also can reach a height of two meters or more if it is given suitable support. For best results it requires medium indirect light. Generally it only needs water when the soil begins to feel dry to the touch.

Zebra Plant (Haworthia fasciata)Grower: Jan's Garden

Closeout price because these beautiful, low-care plants need new homes in larger pots. Each will gradually spread to become a clump of 4-6 inch tall, cactus-like rosettes.Place them outside in full sun and they will grow long, slender wands topped by little fragrant flowers. Bring them into a sheltered porch or windowsill for winter, because they are not hardy north of zone 9b.
These tough little beauties are extremely drought-tolerant and also make a lovely, easy to care for, houseplant. About the only thing you can do wrong with them is to over-water them. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Although they are not a cactus, they make a very attractive addition to a mixed "cactus garden" planting.
